Advocacy: Graduation Requirements

Thank you for your interest in sharing feedback with the Statewide Graduation Council through the survey linked here.


Below are key talking points to help advocate for shifting one unit of arts coursework from a MassCore recommendation to a state graduation requirement. We need students, families, educators, and community members to amplify this message as your voice through this survey can make a meaningful impact.

Survey questions about incorporating the arts into the new state graduation requirements can be found in the following sections: 

Section 1: 

  • What do we want students to know and be able to do when they graduate?  

    • “Engage with the arts” with a scale of 1(Least Important) to 5 (More Important)

  • What do you believe are the most important knowledge and/or skills for Massachusetts graduate to have? (Select up to 3) 

    • “Engage with the arts” 

Section 2: 

  • What coursework and learning experiences should all students complete for college, career, and civic life? 

    • All Massachusetts high school graduates should be required to complete coursework and/or learning experiences in the following areas…

    • 1 Year of Arts (Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree) 

Section 4: 

  • What requirements should be included in a new statewide graduation policy?

    • One year of Arts coursetaking (as defined by the 2019 Massachusetts Arts Frameworks) should be included as a new statewide graduation policy.
