About the Workshop

Dear Music Educators, Pre-Service Teachers, Industry Leaders, Collegiates, and Advanced High School Students,

The MMEA Northeastern District invites everyone from all districts to join us for a full-day Conducting and Rehearsal Techniques Workshop with Dr. Peter Boonshaft on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Belmont Middle & High School.

Instrumental music educators will spend the day making music together in a clinic ensemble while exploring effective rehearsal and conducting techniques with one of the country’s most respected music educators. Participants will also have opportunities to take the podium, conduct selected works, and receive real-time feedback and suggestions from Dr. Boonshaft.

Instrumental music educators in strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion will spend the day engaged in conducting and rehearsal workshops with Dr. Peter Boonshaft, Professor Emeritus of Music at Hofstra University.

Dr. Boonshaft is one of the country’s most highly sought-after conductors and clinicians and is the author of the acclaimed books Teaching Music with Passion, Teaching Music with Purpose, and Teaching Music with Promise.

Participants should bring an instrument and will perform throughout the day as members of the clinic ensemble. Dr. Boonshaft will use the ensemble to model effective rehearsal strategies, conducting techniques, musical communication, and approaches for helping students connect more deeply with the music they perform.

Participants will also be invited to step onto the podium to conduct selected works and receive immediate feedback and coaching from Dr. Boonshaft.

Our goal is for every participant to leave with practical ideas and techniques that can be brought directly back to their students and ensembles.

We hope you’ll join us for a day of music-making, professional growth, collaboration, and practical learning with colleagues from across the region.
