Indian Hill Music School, a community music school in Littleton, MA with a faculty of 60+ professional teaching artists, has an opening in the fall for a Band Teacher to lead a new outreach program at McKay Arts Academy in Fitchburg on Thursdays from 8:00am-12:15pm. The program will launch with 20 5th grade beginner students, and will add one subsequent grade each year until the program is 5th-8th grade. 6th-8th graders will meet on Fridays (8:00am-12:15pm) beginning in 2018-19. The schedule will include a 45-minute full band period (which will begin in January), followed by six 25- to 30-minute sectionals periods for trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, flute, and percussion, respectively. Indian Hill Music faculty members are responsible for: 1) inspiring and sharing their love of music with their students; 2) setting a high bar for students’ levels of technical skill and musicality; 3) clearly communicating expectations and working toward shared goals; 4) advocating for their students to engage in additional IHM programs to deepen their musical development and their commitment to their studies; and 5) being a quality representative of IHM in the field and the community. Ideal candidates should have a degree in music education and a minimum of three years of teaching experience, and must be comfortable working with beginner students of middle school age in an urban public school setting and with teaching all band instruments (trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and percussion). Indian Hill offers many ancillary benefits to our faculty members, including a variety of paid professional performance opportunities and funding for professional development (by application). Regular weekly teaching throughout the school year is required, as is attendance at two annual faculty meetings and the completion of occasional clerical tasks. Timeliness and reliability, as well as strong communication practices with both students/families and school staff, are essential.
